Evolution of Art and Technology

“Technology, like art, is a soaring exercise of the human imagination”

-Daniel Bell

Earlier, technology revolved around ‘inventing’ and helping mankind progress with inventions such as stone tools or boats. It was mostly based around problem solving in order to perform specific tasks. Today, the term technology evokes a very different meaning, it is simply more than machines or a bundle of wires. It rather implies innovation and advancement.

The same goes with the term art- it has evolved from paintings on caves to art installations and Al generated art. Technology and art are very different spheres but have had a special interrelationship as both seem to have evolved. Technological innovation walks hand in hand with progressive artistic concepts where they both intersect and influence each other.

With the boom of the internet, people realized its vast scope and possibilities for the art world. The nature of art has been changing in public spheres and public interaction. It’s moving beyond exhibitions, museums, and art galleries and onto the digital space in the form of computer graphics, pixel art, digital paintings, virtual reality, AI-generated art etc.

Technological innovation is redefining the art world and has created new inspiration for modern artists today. Art changes as technology evolves. Every technological change creates a new form of expression for artists. When traditional art principles are brought to life with modern driven techniques, it results in an all-encompassing genre of new art.

Andy Warhol, a leading artist of the 1960s Pop art movements was one of the pioneers of digital art. He was the first artist to use the Amiga computers, introduced in 1984 to digitally generate new art forms. Through his photographic silkscreen prints, he introduced a fascinating new form of artistic expression there on.

A lot of contemporary and new media art focuses on virtual immersive experiences that test the boundary between reality and imagination. The artist’s toolbox today is wider than ever. The role of artists is shifting to that of creators. Being a creator now implies envisioning and creating art that could be either traditional, contemporary, or modern forms of artwork.

The new digital face of art is transforming the way art is perceived, shared, and consumed and has opened a new avalanche of possibilities. It has also made art more accessible and widened its audience consumption altogether.

The internet has played a major role in broadening the boundaries of what is considered art. There has been a constant debate around the impact of technology on art. Most times it is considered as ‘polluting’ the creative process of art or changing the innate nature of art.

But technological presence in art has made room for groundbreaking creativity, beyond the conventional boundaries of the art world. Many artists are leveraging these powerful technical tools to create multi-disciplinary mixed media art that’s changing the world.

Motiva was born fusing together art and technology. Striking artwork with inspiring quotes is backed by Motiva’s one-of-a-kind optimized system that results in a new type of artwork and creative medium of expression for artists and creators. The aim was to preserve its appearance as a traditional art piece while concealing its technological depths. Motiva’s unique algorithm efficiently fits the quotes into a letter grid that is concealed within the frame. Its long lasting battery enables a ‘clean effect’ with no exposed wires or cables dangling. It also has light and motion sensors that are hidden within the frame. Motiva’s overall design complements and upholds its impression of that of a traditional art piece.

Continuous technological advancement that has become inseparable with our lives, will continue to push art forward beyond its traditional confines and will define a new paradigm of art language through avant-garde works of art.
